Physical Therapy for surgical centers after total joint replacement
Physical Therapy in outpatient surgical centers for total joint surgeries is an integral part of the patient’s recovery process. This approach combines the convenience of outpatient surgery with the benefits of immediate post-operative rehabilitation.
Some total joint surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements, are performed in outpatient surgical centers. After the surgery, patients are transferred to recovery and are monitored by RNs for continuous assessments and monitoring of their status.
Physical Therapy is ordered by the surgeon and the patient begins the thorough Physical Therapy evaluation once they are medically stable and alert. The Physical Therapy evaluation and treatment sessions consists of functional mobility training such as: bed mobility training, transfer training, gait training, exercise program training and home safety education. The physical therapist focuses heavily on extensive education to the family/care provider to ensure a safe discharge home. Detailed family/care provider training is done to assist with a safe discharge home.
